Updated, re-imagined, and re-engineered for 2024/2025, the brand new Spatz 'SHIELD2' Winter Jacket is unlike anything else on the market. The updated version is sleeker, better fitting, and more breathable, while still delivering the legendary warmth, waterproofing, and comfort of the original 'SHIELD' jacket.
The design brief was simple: to create the only cycling jacket you'll need to ride and train through a harsh winter — no matter the conditions.
Proudly designed, tested, and manufactured in the North of England, the 'SHIELD2' is made from 100 percent recycled fabrics. Its water-repellent coating is plant-based and PFC-free, and all packaging is fully compostable.
The jacket's fit is close and aerodynamic, designed to sit perfectly over Spatz Base Layers. In classic Spatz style, the neck is cut high, and the arms are long and close fitting. The front is trimmed short for comfort in a riding position, while the rear flap is cut long for maximum spray protection.
Every detail has been carefully considered by cyclists who ride in the worst conditions. For 2024/2025, all panels have been upgraded. The main body and upper arms use a new Windtex Evolution Active Pro fabric that is waterproof, windproof, thermal, breathable, and incredibly comfortable. It features four-way stretch and a brushed fleece inner lining that traps warm air and wicks moisture away.
New for this version, the lower arms, collar, and rear hem are made from a laser-cut, hydrophobic neoprene-like fabric that eliminates bulky hems and improves glove integration. The sleeves are tailored to work with Spatz Gloves, and the collar and hem fit smoothly against the body.
The rear panel uses DWR-coated Roubaix fabric that is also PFC-free, fleece-lined, and four-way stretch. It offers warmth and flexibility, helping regulate body temperature during long winter rides.
The 'SHIELD2' includes three rear cargo pockets and a secure zippered phone or coin pocket, all designed for easy access with gloved hands. Reflective dark grey logos remain stealthy in daylight but light up under headlights for added visibility.
Spatzwear has collaborated with Lusso in Manchester to bring together technical innovation and manufacturing excellence. This partnership has resulted in a jacket that sets a new standard for winter riding apparel.

I've not used the jacket in the rain yet but it certainly measures up in near zero temperatures and a north wind. I sized up slightly and not being a young greyhound made the right pick.
Fits well (Med 5ft 8) and holds back the rain and wind. Pretty warm too. Very good value for money. I like the cuff / forearm fit and the high collar, and pockets are tight but massive.
Ive only properly been out in this over this weekend. what i love about the jacket is the fit- you dont feel like you are being slowed down by flapping materials. The closures fit great too- especially the arm/glove junction. Better than any castelli jacket. and the pockets are fine- where you expect them to be. And the orange colour is brilliant- literally!
My only unresolved question is thermal (hence one less star)- i felt quite cold around my shoulders until I warmed up and even then the feeling didnt entirely go away. But i was riding recovery/endurance, i would want this jacket for tempo/group riding. That said, as the temperature dropped i felt warmer in it (not sure how that works). I was riding with the basez extreme baselayer. Might be trapping too much moisture around my shoulders. I need to experiment more with baselayers.
I would also imagine this would be absolutely fine in the wet- something you cannot say about teh £400 Castelli ultimate- which is a lovely jacket, but it stops beading after 30mins or so in the rain i find, even after restoring the finish.
so yeah- few more miles and perhaps some experimentation with base layers should see this to a 5 stars
Amazing quality
not as good as Castelli
